A big trend in to reduce cost is use on near-hermetic packaging. But when only the best will do, hermetic is still the packaging technology of choice. A recent product announcement from optical networking company Oclaro highlights use of hermetic package for their newest high performance modulator components.

This was an interesting technology article on packaging vertical cavity, light emitting lasers (VCSELs). The potential is significant for a wide range of applications, from automotive to medical. Innovation is alive and well in northern Europe!

I created this as an experiment in open sharing. Engineers who design and specify hermetically engineered packages sometimes have a difficult time finding unbiased sources of information, design guidelines, material properties, etc. This site is a place where reference information can be consolidated, and interesting applications can be shared.
